What is methanol?
Methanol is a raw material with a tremendous potential and it is already one of the most shipped in the world. Methanol finds use everywhere, from the timber industry to pharmaceutical companies.
Chemical industry
Methanol is widely used in the chemical industry both as a solvent and as a reactant. Formaldehyde and acetic acid are but a few of the chemicals that are made from this raw material.
Transportation
Methanol is used as fuel in certain types of engines. Blended with gasoline it produces an efficent fuel, that has lower emissions then regular gasoline. Even biofuel finds use in it.
Antifreeze
Methanol lowers the freezing point of water based liquids, making it great for windshield washer fluid. Radiators in most automotive engines use an antifreeze and water mixture to help with extreme temperatures.
Plastics
High perfomance plastics, as used in quality electronics are usually made with the help of methanol.
Direct Methanol Fuel Cell
Methanols energy density is fifteen times higher than lihtium-ion batteries. Methanol fuel cells don’t need a separate hydrogen separation system, since it can pull hydrogen straight from the methanol
Waste managment
Methanol is used as an organic compound for the denitrification of wastewater. It helps to accelerate the activity of anaerobic bacteria, who turn the harmful nitrate into nitrous gases.
